Celebrating Mandela Day with the elderly

Time with the elderly was 67 minutes well spent.

This was according to staff members from Bryanston-based company, Talk2Us after spending 67 minutes at Parktown’s Park Care Home on Mandela Day.

The 15-member Talk2Us team said they had all spent significantly more than 67 minutes of their own personal time before 18 July came around.

Talk2Us founder Linda Hamman said, “Each of us baked and decorated cupcakes for residents and patients at the Park Care facility and a group of Talk2Us volunteers delivered them on the day.”

Hamman said it was rewarding to see how her team automatically responded positively to initiatives such as that one.

“We introduced the concept of Mandela Day into conversation and the ideas immediately started flowing,” she added.

A team member had seen Nerine Gardiner’s GirlWithCake blog, which tracks Gardiner baking cakes and presenting them to the less fortunate.

“We liked this idea as it was something we could all do,” said Hamman.

On the day, a second Talk2Us team delivered cakes and clothing to Sister Bettie Glover in Noordgezicht.

Sister Glover sees to the feeding of several hundred people in her community.

Park Care Home was established in 1961 and provides affordable 24-hour nursing care for 320 aged and extremely physically frail patients.

The home also provides nursing care for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia, along with other related conditions.
