Homeless woman found dead in Paterson Park

NORWOOD - Just two weeks prior to Women’s Day, a lifeless body of an elderly and homeless woman was found at Paterson Park in Norwood.

Every year on 9 August we celebrate Women’s Day in South Africa – a day that pays homage to the women of our nation; the mothers, wives, sisters and daughters who fought tirelessly against the tyranny of the apartheid government. However, just two weeks prior to Women’s Day, the corpse of an elderly and homeless woman was found in Paterson Park, Norwood.

According to Norwood police, the body was discovered early in the morning by one of its officers, who was on his way to work on 22 July.

Norwood police spokesperson Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said, “The police officer saw from a distance what looked like a human body lying on the ground… he alerted his colleagues. They went to investigate and they found the lifeless body of a pensioner on her 60s with bruises on her legs.”

She said the woman was certified dead on the scene. Tsoanyane added that the police suspected foul play as they found the woman’s belongings were scattered nearby. She said, “Her clothes were scattered around, her wallet was also taken out of her purse with an undisclosed amount of money.”

Tsoanyane added that an inquest docket was opened and an investigation was underway. Tsoanyane stated that she managed to trace someone who was able to identify the deceased. She said the victim was originally from Meadowlands. No arrests had been made yet but police will wait for post mortem results and a proper investigation into the matter.

This is the second shocking incident that has taken place, right under the Norwood police’s nose: on 22 May police discovered an arms cache at a house which, like Paterson Park, is also adjacent to police station.
