Long Walk to Umthatha begins

PARKTOWN - Sane Nkabinde and Irene Rügheimer of the Dark Rose Foundation embarked on a 840km journey to Umthatha, to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

The humanitarians left for the Eastern Cape on Mandela Day and will spend 27 days, a tribute to the 27 years Mandela spent behind bars, on the road to the Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu outside Umthatha.

Construction of the hospital is underway with various fundraising initiatives underway to raise the required R1 billion. Nkabinde and Rügheimer aim to raise at least R500 000 during their journey.

Adjacent to Wits University’s Medical School, the hospital is expected to be a world-class, highly advanced specialised children’s hospital that will employ about 150 doctors and 451 nurses. It will have about 240 beds and eight operating theatres.
