Mandela Day with the heritage foundation

JOBURG - Do something in memory of those who have walked these streets long before us this Mandela Day, with a cemetery clean-up.

The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation will lead a clean-up of Brixton Cemetery on 18 July, following on from the work done there last year.

“We’ll be back in Brixton Cemetery, clearing ivy off the gravestones so they can be read and so that the ivy doesn’t destroy the stone,” said foundation spokesperson, Flo Bird.

“We’ll also cut back the robinea, a beastly, invasive weed with pretty white flowers and horrible thorns that lifts gravestones and makes it impossible to get through to those graves we want to visit later this year, namely those from the 1914 to 1918 war.”

Last year’s Mandela Day visit saw the foundation team clean the graves of Mary Fitzgerald, Herbert Evans, and HE Bateman.

“We had a grand time last year, so we’ll check on [the graves we cleaned], and move down to the posh row of Presbyterians, which includes the Anstey’s family plot,” she said.

Volunteers should bring gloves and secateurs with them.

The clean-up will take place on 18 July at Brixton Cemetery, Caroline Street, Brixton, and will begin at the coffin rest near the office at 10am.
