Local businesses blame city for water wastage

WORKERS in Melrose Arch and surrounding businesses are worried about the waste of water in the area due to a burst water pipe on Corlett Drive.

There is a constant flow of water down the road, which is also causing damage to the road.

The situation has remained unattended for three weeks while gallons of water are lost every day.

Max Ginsberg, of the BP garage on Corlett Drive, showed Rosebank Killarney Gazette where the water was flowing, saying that at first he believed the gushing water was a BP problem.

“I noticed the water flowing from one of the manholes and assumed it was one of ours. A plumber from BP came to inspect it but then told me it was a municipal problem and we should notify them,” said Ginsberg.

“I have reported the burst not only to the municipality but also to the Johannesburg Roads Agency as I was told it could be a storm water pipe burst.”

Showing the Gazette his record of calls to the two entities, Ginsberg said both the roads agency and Joburg Water kept telling him that it wasn’t their problem.

A neighbouring business owner, who asked not to be named in the paper said, “We’re always complaining about saving water but then so much water is left to go to waste because the city does not send anyone to fix it.”

Stanlib employee working in Melrose Arch, Puleng Moloi said she was scared that the problem would lead to water being cut off in the area.

“There is nothing more unpleasant than not having clean running water when you have to be at work for eight hours; and worse, with so many people needing to use the bathroom facilities,” she said.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency and Joburg Water have been contacted for comment. The two entities had not responded by the time of publishing.
