21 icons to inspire pupils

MABONENG PRECINCT - Celebrated South Africans exhibition to host educational workshops.

Pupils can look forward to an interactive workshop that will introduce them to the icons who shaped our turbulent, colourful past.

Young people will be able to experience something of the courage and fortitude of 21 of South Africa’s heroes at the 21 Icons – Portrait of a Nation exhibition at the Museum of African Design, Maboneng Precinct.

The exhibition, a celebration of incredible individuals, reflects the actions, courage, commitment and passions of those who laid the foundations of South Africa’s 20-year democracy, and describes the country’s successes, and challenges its potential.

The 21 people who were photographed by Adrian Steirn are Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk, Desmond Tutu, Sophia Williams de Bruyn, Kumi Naidoo, Lillian Cingo, Nadine Gordimer, Ahmed Kathrada, George Bizos, Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg, Helen Sebidi, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Gary Player, William Kentridge, Prof. Phillip Tobias, Evelina Tshabalala, John Kani, Zackie Achmat, Karel Benadie, and Gcina Mhlope.

The workshops will be conducted in conjunction with the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre.

Each workshop will last approximately three hours, and pupils will be guided through the exhibition and briefed on who the icons were and how the portraits were shot.

“Pupils will then participate in an interactive workshop where we will examine moral choices people engage in, with a focus on bystander and activist’s behaviour,” said centre spokesperson Arlene Sher.

“Pupils will identify common attributes of positive role-models… and will be encouraged to participate and implement activist behaviour within themselves and their communities, as well as encourage a sense of ubuntu among the pupils. This will all be done through a series of interactive exercises, discussions and worksheets.”

The free workshops are suitable for pupils from grade 6 to 12.

The exhibition will run until 17 August at the Museum of African Design, 281 Commissioner Street, Johannesburg.
