Pavement poo woes

PARKVIEW – Parkview resident Conny Stadler is livid at vagrants who defecate and urinate on the pavement outside her home.

Stadler has been a Parkview resident for almost a decade and has her hands full with vagrants using her pavement as a toilet.

A wheelchair-bound vagrant who said his name is Howard de Villiers, admitted to the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that he was one of the people responsible for relieving himself outside the woman’s home. “I was pressed, I’m sorry,” he said.

Stadler said the problem began about two years ago, “now it is getting out of hand,” said the visibly irritated woman. “It’s a health hazard, now I can’t sit in the garden. I can’t even eat when I think of the poo outside, it’s just non-stop.” she said.

She asked how people could relieve themselves on the pavement outside someone’s home, “How do they expect you to feel,” she asked. She said she had raised the matter with police and the Community Police Forum, without any substantive results.

Ward 117 councillor, Tim Truluck said the city council had to come up with a long-term plan to address the problem of thousands of vagrants in Johannesburg. He said the police had tried, in another incident, to remove homeless people at Zoo Lake. “But they keep coming back,” he said.

Although de Villiers, from Eldorado Park told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that he would clean up his mess, he didn’t honour his commitment. Stadler said she had confronted him before and he allegedly justified his actions by telling her that she did not understand what it was like to be in a wheelchair.
