Helping the homeless

The Rosebank Homeless Association held its Annual General Meeting on 9 July.

At the meeting, which was held on what may have been one of the coldest nights of the year, the newly re-elected chairperson, Judith Briggs, said that the cold was a stark reminder of why the association does the work that it does.

She subsequently appealed to the public to donate winter warmers to be given out to people living on the street. These can be dropped off either at Immaculata Shelter on Sturdee Avenue or placed in the community donation box at the Rosebank Mall.

The association, which co-ordinates community efforts to relieve the plight of the homeless in the Rosebank area, together with the Rosebank police, will host a party for the homeless on 18 July – Mandela Day – where they will treat the homeless to food, winter warmers and toiletries.

Members of the public are invited to attend the party and bring food to augment the party.

Other projects which were reported to the meeting included the St Martin’s soup kitchen, Immaculata Shelter, Bokamosa, which sponsors children of Homeless Talk vendors to attend crèche, and as well as the association’s car guard project.

Car guards in the Rosebank area are administered jointly by the Rosebank Management District and the police.

With paid parking moving to Rosebank, it was mentioned that the existing car guards would be trained to issue tickets.

Ward 117 councillor, Tim Truluck also gave a brief overview of the integrated development plan for Rosebank which he hoped would include a community centre with facilities for the homeless.
