Daycare centre launched for senior citizens

Senior citizens have somewhere to go to fill their days with friendship and activities at a new centre open to all.

The dreams of four Rand Aid Association employees were realised on 4 July when Rand Aid Association opened its doors to a new daycare centre for senior citizens.

The centre is situated in the Lynhurst-based Ron Smith Care Centre, and is the brainchild of Zabeth Zühlsdorff, general manager of Rand Aid’s services and the advance division; Helen Petrie, complex manager at Elphin Lodge; Phyllis Phillips, liaison manager at Ron Smith Care Centre; and Matron Avril Maltman, nursing services manager.

The new centre now allows caregivers to involve senior citizens who do not live in the retirement homes in meaningful activities within a supportive environment.

John Robinson, chairperson of the institution’s board, said people should view their time at the daycare centre as the start of a new chapter, with the promise of new friendships and the revival of old hobbies under the guidance of a caring occupational therapy team.

He said, “Occupational therapy is not about doing things for residents, but fostering their independence for as long as possible.”

Attendance at the daycare centre is on a flexible basis and can be structured according to each person’s needs.
