Frequent power cuts irk Illovo

Residents of Illovo are complaining about the frequent power outages in their area.

One Illovo resident, Elaine van Woudenberg, has demanded that Johannesburg City Power find a solution to their problems especially in view of the cold temperatures this season.

“Electricity outages in the area have become more frequent but I think my biggest problem with all of this is that when we get through to the call centre, no one can account for the outage and neither can they help,” said Van Woudenberg.

Waking up to the realisation that there was no hot water on 1 July, Van Woudenberg and her neighbours were also forced to go through the day with no electricity.

She said, “At 6am this morning I woke up to no electricity, now its 3pm and yet I still haven’t been able to get anyone to tell me why there is no power.”

Spokesperson for Joburg City Power, Sydney Mphahlele said the outage was caused by a medium voltage cable fault.

“City Power technicians did the repairs to the cable and power was restored,” he added.

When asked if cable theft was the cause of many of the outages in the area, Mphahlele responded, “Yes, there is a cable theft problem across the City of Johannesburg, Illovo included. Cable thieves constantly steal neutral wires and customers get affected.”
