Man celebrates turning 100 with a beer

Although he never had children and his wife passed away about eight years ago, Sandringham Gardens’ staff and close family members made sure that the home’s resident Solly Edelman celebrated his 100th birthday in style.

The centenarian’s party, which was held on 1 July, was attended by his fellow Sandringham Gardens residents as well as some family members.

Because it was a special day, Edelman was served his all-time favourite beer at 10am. The man’s face showed bemusement as the staff served him with a 750ml bottle of beer and later a big cake to celebrate his milestone.

Elderman said, “I feel exactly the same way I felt when I turned 16 years old. I am on top of my life, it’s wonderful. Now I am going to drink all of my beer.”

Addressing the attendees, Esme van der Walt of Sandringham Gardens said in September this year, the home will be taking Edelman to a party which will be hosted by the government for all those who are 100 years and over. Van der Walt said, “We want to wish you a healthy and happy birthday. Thank you for being a role model to all of us. I just want you to know you are great and I hope next year you celebrate your 101st birthday.”

His great-nephew, Stanley Allison shed some tears of joy. He described Edelman as a peaceful man who has been the backbone for the family.

Allison said, “It has been an absolute pleasure to spend time with you. Thank you from all of us for being a pillar of strength for our family and always setting a superb example as a true mensch.” Erene Mitchell, a social worker said, “We love the idea of celebrating such an important day with you – you are so special to all of us.” Most people described Edelman as a quiet person who never thinks of himself but always puts other people before him. They said he never caused any trouble.

If you had to turn 100, how would you celebrate the milestone?
