Cops alleged to have killed Mido Macia fired (Warning: Graphic Video)

JOBURG – National police commissioner, General Riah Phiyega announced that the eight policemen linked to the death a man who was dragged behind a police van last year have been fired.

Mido Macia, a taxi driver and Mozambican national had allegedly been involved in an altercation with police about his taxi obstructing traffic.

Cellphone footage showing the man being dragged by a police van for several hundred metres, went viral and caused public outrage. The police officers were later suspended and charged with his murder.

The Mozambican national was found dead in the Daveyton police station’s holding cells a few hours later, reportedly only wearing his underwear and socks. An autopsy revealed that he had died as a result of head injuries and internal bleeding.

Constables Lungisa Chalmers Gwababa, Bongani Kolisi, Percy Jonathan Mnisi, Bongumusa Mdluli, Sipho Sidwell Ngobeni, Mbongeleni Thamsanqa Ngema, and Warrant Officers Alfred Linda Sololo and Mishack Malele were fired on 3 July.

Phiyega said the police officers had negatively affected the reputation of the police “Those who do not do their work in accordance with our prescripts and code of conduct, such as committing criminal misconduct, can expect to find themselves outside the Saps,” she warned.

A criminal case is underway in the Delmas court. The accused are expected to reappear on 16 February 2015 when they will have to answer to a case of murder.
