Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minaar, said over a period of seven days, 30 pedestrians were issued fines for R200 for walking on the M1 freeway.
“It is a transgression and also dangerous,” he said.
Minaar said Metro officials had noticed an increase in the number of pedestrians walking along or across freeways throughout the city. An operation has begun to curb the problem and would be extended to other major freeways.
Public transport operators were also advised not to drop off their passengers on freeways as this also played a role in accidents which could lead to fatalities, he said.
