Would-be robber shot dead, another arrested

A would be robber was shot and killed by the security guards in a foiled robbery in Babington Road, Mountain View.

According to police, a domestic worker who was sleeping in an outside room, heard footsteps in the early hours of the morning.

She woke up and quietly opened the door. Norwood police spokesperson Constable Nonzwakazi Tsoanyane said the domestic worker was surprised to notice that the lights in the main house were switched off, although she had left them on the night before as her employers were not at home.

Tsoanyane said, “The domestic worker also saw three men helping each other to climb the wall of the main house. She then went inside her room and pressed the panic button.”

She said the security guards responded to the call and arrived at the house; the domestic worker opened the gate for them and they found the suspects ransacking the house. A shootout ensued between the security guards and the suspects and one suspect was shot dead at the scene.

Tsoanyane added, “One suspect was shot and wounded but was taken to hospital under police guard. The third suspect managed to flee the scene as he jumped over the wall, into a neighbouring garden. The police saw some blood stains which led to the discovery of a pistol but the serial number was filed off.”

She added that the wounded suspect was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court as soon as he recovers.
