Take a stroll and meet Joburg’s immigrant communities

JOBURG - A walking tour next month will give sightseers a chance to explore the vibrant immigrant communities that have made the City of Gold their home.

Ancient Secrets tour operator, Ishvara Dhayan said the Fordsburg and Mayfair communities included people from countries such as Somalia, Egypt, Jordan, Ethiopia, Turkey, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Palestine, Eritrea, Syria, and Sudan.

“We will visit Little Mogadishu, the Somali area; Little Dhaka, the Bengali area; a Hindu prayer shop, and an Islamic clothes shop,” he said.

The tour will also include visits to a Pakistani spice shop, a Somali textile shop, an Ethiopian cafe, an Egyptian hookah shop, Somali perfume shops, a Turkish kebab restaurant, and a Gujarati restaurant and spice shop.

“We [will] conclude with an option of lunch at a traditional [vegetarian] Indian restaurant or a Turkish kebab restaurant,” said Dhayan.

“Bring your camera, and cash for shopping.”

The tour will take place on 5 July, and will begin at the corner of Mint Road and Albertina Sisulu Street, Fordsburg, at 10am.
