Pridwin athletes get cultured

Although Pridwin Preparatory School may be known for its sports, the boys at the school do enjoy getting off the field and indulging in some cultural pursuits.

The second term at Pridwin, although packed with sporting events and tours, appears to be a little more focused on culture.

The school organised three of its annual major cultural events which included the annual Pridwin Jazz Festival, the popular school play, and the six-week reading challenge and book parade.

Rumble in the Jungle, a recent play by Pridwin’s Senior School, drew in a big crowd and the performances were welcomed by appreciative audiences who responded with a standing ovation.

Very loosely based on Disney’s, The Lion King, a good musical score, lighting and imaginative costumes and make-up added to the magical performances the boys gave on the night.

Following their performance, the boys went on to get involved in the 2014 Pridwin Reading Challenge titled, The Poet in Me.

According to librarian and teacher at the school, Charmaine Rogers the challenge was focused on the merits of poetry in literature.

“The challenge was divided into three parts – the children were required to read about the great poets and learn to recite a poem of their choice in a choral verse format; a contest for the boys to write their own calligrams or shape poetry and create a class scrapbook of all their creations; and the children were also encouraged to read as many books as possible during the six week period,” she explained.

A Book Parade was hosted following the six week challenge, where the children were encouraged to go to school dressed as their favourite literary character.

“So, without our sports-mad, young Pridwinians even realising it, they were immersed in culture during the winter term, and they thoroughly enjoyed every moment of each event,” added Rogers.
