Old Eds player wins first tour title

OLD EDS' Christo Potgieter won his first squash tour title.

In winning the Maggie Beer South Australian Open squash title, Potgieter has become one of the lowest ranked players to win a Professional Squash Association Tour title.

Coming into the tournament in the South Austrailan town of Tanunda ranked 275th, he was unseeded, but he beat the 8th seed and followed this with wins over 3rd and 2nd seeds to reach the final.

There he met the South Australian favourite, Mike Corren, who himself had set a record by winning his 50th tour title the week before.

Thereafter, it was not long before Corren, ranked 79 in the world, jumped into a two-game lead.

It looked as though Potgieter’s giant killing feats were over, but he went on to win the next three games 11-6, 12-10 and 11-9.

Corren was not only the defending champion, but had won the title three times since 2008.

“Christo certainly lit up the tournament with his trickery and his sense of humour,” said tournament organiser, Grant Norman.
