Construction begins for children’s hospital

PARKTOWN – Construction has begun at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Parktown.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust awarded the construction bid to Group Five and the hospital is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016.

Nana Magomola, deputy chairwoman of the trust said, “This represents a key milestone in our efforts to make Nelson Mandela’s last wish of building a children’s hospital in South Africa a reality.”

The trust will raise R1 billion for construction, equipment and training medical professionals of which R570 million has been raised thus far.

“We still have a long way to go, but we are confident that, with the support of those who share this dream, we will be able to build and present to the public a fitting last legacy of this international icon,” said Magomola.

Adjacent to Wits University’s Medical School, the hospital is expected to be a world-class, highly advanced specialised children’s hospital that will employ about 150 doctors and 451 nurses. It will have about 240 beds and eight operating theatres.

The trust is still calling for donations. To donate towards the building of the hospital, SMS ‘GIFT’ to 40301.
