Active citizenship encouraged

SAXONWOLD – Nedbank donated R1 million towards the construction of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Parktown where construction is currently underway.

Maseda Ratshikuni, head of cause marketing at the bank handed over the cheque at a transformation dialogue at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in Saxonwold.

The dialogue is held monthly, in partnership with the University of South Africa, Business Day and SAfm. The dialogue explores how individuals and organisations can contribute to socioeconomic transformation through active citizenship.

Panelists were Sibongile Mkhabela, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Dr Nakedi Makhura, head of economic research at the Land Bank, Kone Gugushe, Nedbank divisional executive, Yusuf Abramjee, Lead SA activist and Dr Genevieve James of Unisa.

Abramjee asked how people go to bed at night knowing that others would go to sleep on an empty stomach. “How will we create a better South Africa if we take this back-seat approach and say we are unable to change the world?” he asked. “How do we ignore the socioeconomic problems in our communities?”

The dialogue was broadcast on SAfm.
