Park, school, foodie heaven coming to the city

JOBURG - With the announcements of a new park, school and food lover's heaven in the city, the expression 'You can't stop progress' rings loud and clear.

Maboneng Precinct’s first urban park is on track to open later this year, and will be followed by a primary school next year.

Lovers of food can look forward to an exciting new development in Newtown, set to open later this year.

“As our neighbourhood develops and grows, we’re introducing spaces and facilities that are essential to a community,” said Maboneng Precinct spokesperson Hayleigh Evans.

Common Ground, the precinct’s first park, has been designed to include various sport and recreational facilities, including a children’s playground, eateries and craft stalls.

“The park will combine children’s recreational facilities… sport and cultural facilities with multiple retail spaces to create a dynamic environment,” said Evans.

The park will also host live music and open-air cultural events.

Common Ground will be launched on 1 September at the corner of Van Beek and Beacon streets, Maboneng Precinct.

Next door to the park, on Van Beek Street, is where a new place of education will open its doors in January.

Spark Maboneng, a primary school, will offer Grade R to Grade 7 pupils a “blended learning model”.

Several old warehouses at 1 Fox Street, Newtown, are on the way to becoming what driving force behind the project, Gerald Garner described as a “permanent marketplace and retail precinct”.

Garner called this his “dream project”, and said this emporium of food, wine, design and lifestyle goods will showcase South African produce.

“The paperwork is in place, and the Johannesburg Land Company is ready to start the renovation of the two largest warehouses that will form phase one of this exciting new precinct,” he said, adding that it will open in time for October’s Joburg City Festival.

Garner said The Sheds @1 Fox will provide travellers with a “quintessential South African experience”.

“The marketplace and retail spaces… will operate from Thursday until Sunday every week, from 7am until 7pm, [from] October until December,” he said.

“Food trucks, bars, event space, [the] wine bar and restaurants will operate into the evening.”
