The Local Grill, owned and run by long-time restaurateur Steve Maresch, retained its throne of Steakhouse Champion of South Africa in the Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships for 2014.
This was announced on 24 June at the second annual finale held at the local restaurant.
During the announcement lunch, proud winner, Maresch and his team of chefs and servers pulled out all the stops to show why the Joburg North steakhouse was hard to beat.
This after the top five steakhouses in the country went head-to-head with personal visits by the Steakhouse Championships judges, led by MasterChefSA judge and top chef Pete Goffe-Wood in the weeks leading up to the finale.
Announcing that the title was going nowhere, Goffe-Wood appeared confident the judges had made the right choice, saying the standard of all five finalists was very high indeed but The Local Grill deserved the win.
“It is clear that the steakhouse category is alive in South Africa, but the number of steakhouses that took part in the competition certainly was not representative of the number of steakhouses we have in the country,” he said.
“Steak is the quintessential South African restaurant experience because it’s who we are, and I am glad to have been part of a competition that celebrates the all-beef experience.”
An ecstatic Maresch said, “While other steakhouses may offer a wonderful dining experience, what makes us special is that we offer every customer a real beef experience.”
Maresch thanked his suppliers, saying that it was because of their dedication to beef that his steakhouse could offer its patrons excellent service in terms of selection, knowledge and the all-round meat experience.
Marc Kent from Wolftrap praised the how the restaurant had, in the past year, not only embraced being named the steak champs but also for embodying the wine brand.
