Gautrain bus drivers return to work after walkout

Gautrain commuters travelling via Rosebank and the Sandton stations were disrupted on 24 and 25 June.

This after Gautrain bus drivers briefly walked off the job after what Bombela, the company running the high-speed trains, said was a “misunderstanding”.

A Gazette sister paper reported on the morning of 25 June that Gautrain announced on their Facebook page that their bus services would be disrupted.

Bus commuters were urged to make alternative arrangements but were assured that train services would continue to operate as normal.

Independent newspapers reported that spokesman Errol Braithwaite explained that several bus drivers misunderstood the terms of a bargaining council wage agreement signed in May.

It further reported that Braithwaite said the agreement signed will be effective as of July, however it will only reflect on driver payslips at the end of July.

“Several bus drivers were expecting to see the agreement reflected in their June salary, and walked off the job,” said Braithwaite.

Bombela admitted that the bus services did suffer some disruptions on night of 24 June and the next morning, but fortunately the matter was resolved and all the buses are running normally again.
