Musician hands out blankets to homeless

Kwaito star, Ishmael Morabe’s Keep Me Warm SA initiative of handing out blankets to the homeless was well received.

On 19 June, Morabe handed over 200 blankets to the homeless in an effort to keep those in the streets warm this winter. Among those who benefited from this worthy cause was a 79-year-old street dweller who has been homeless for more than 20 years.

Morabe said the initiative was inspired by his own experience, as he was once homeless and a blanket was a luxury he just could not afford.

“Homelessness is a societal problem that affects millions of people in this country,” said Morabe.

“We’re so accustomed to not paying attention to the homeless when we see them in the streets. But, it’s important for people to be looking out for other people, especially the needy.

“We can prevent one person from freezing to death out there. I wish more celebrities would use the power they have to lend a helping hand.”

Morabe, who was accompanied by his friends and manager, made a few stops in the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas. Prophet Paseka Mboro also made a surprise visit in support of the initiative. He donated 100 blankets.

The Avulekile Amasango hit maker, was overwhelmed when he found a long queue of people waiting to receive blankets in the middle of the night along the Vodacom Tower Bridge in Hillbrow.

Morabe said as much as he would have loved to do more for the homeless, his supply of blankets was limited and could not cover the number of people who had waited to receive warmth. He has, however, promised to make a plan and return to those who were left without any blankets.
