Talkabout for Migrant Journeys at Wam

BRAAMFONTEIN - Two talkabouts at Wits Art Museum (Wam) will enable visitors to really get to grips with the Ngezinyawo - Migrant Journeys exhibition this weekend.

Organised by veteran curator Fiona Rankin-Smith, history professor Peter Delius and researcher Laura Phillips, the exhibition considers issues of migrant labour that form part of a nearly 200-year history that continues to affect our society today.

The two talkabouts, one of which is aimed at families, will explore some of the film, photography, contemporary artworks, ethnographic artefacts and archival documents that comprise the exhibition.

“Like the experience of migrants, visitors will participate in a physical journey through the museum space,” said Wam spokesperson Jessica Foli.

“They will walk the road alongside early migrants to the cities, who sought work on the mines… Visitors will also encounter extraordinarily creative everyday objects, music and performances that transcended the daily struggle.”

The 21 June talkabout at 12pm, led by Wam’s Leigh Blanckenberg, will feature family activities.

Space is limited to 30 families, so booking is essential.

The 22 June talkabout at 11am will be led by museum docent Jackie Potgieter, who will look at a selection of works from the exhibition.

The talkabouts are free of charge.
