After Midnight exhibition to push boundaries with featured multimedia elements

Ronél de Jager's exhibition uses imagery, technology and loss to capture the concept of 'shadows'

Inspired by the memory of her late brother, Ronél de Jager’s solo exhibition is set to enthral at Room Gallery. The exhibition, titled After Midnight, will open on 5 June and run until 6 July, and brings the concept of ‘shadows’ to life using technology and art.

De Jager explained that the concept of exploring ‘shadows’ came in the wake of her late brother’s illness, when she started observing the shadows on her bedroom walls.

“The reflection of light through windows and trees has always been a kind of gateway of wonder for me,” she explained.

She added that what began as experimentation with shadows, evolved into a greater awareness of the subject with the end-result being her capturing and translating this into painted images.

Turning the concept of different ‘shadows’ into an intricate artwork brought its own challenges, with De Jager highlighting that getting to grips with the ever-changing technological advances in the world of art was her biggest challenge.

“This has once again proven to me that the realm of the artist is changing – artists no longer only focus on one chosen medium, but branch out into various other mediums to…push their boundaries,” she explained.

This is her first solo exhibition utilising multimedia, but De Jager said that she had always wanted to push the boundaries when it came to her work.

Of any future plans, De Jager said she’ll be focusing on installing her second public artwork titled Woorde Ontgaan My and getting her A.M artwork series published at the final show.

The exhibition is the first in a three-part series of exhibitions; the second instalment is titled A.M. (After Midnight): An Interlude; this exhibition will run from 18 to 20 July in the basement of Newtown’s Turbine Hall.

The third and final exhibition is titled A.M. (After Midnight) and will be hosted by Lizamore and Associates Gallery in February 2015.

The show will be a climatic end to the A.M series by De Jager and will feature installations of paintings and light/video projections interacting with a central sculptural installation.
