New housing project on the cards for Norwood

Come June 30, Norwood residents will know who will be responsible for the new development set to take place on one of the open lands in the area.

Ward 81 councillor, Marcelle Ravid told the North Eastern Tribune that the open land on 6th Road near Patterson Park Recreation Centre would be developed and turned into a residential area.

Ravid said there were four bidders for the tender to develop the area.

She said the City of Joburg initially wanted to build a shopping centre on the land which used to house the Norwood swimming pool. “That idea was opposed and residents said they wanted the place to be turned into a residential area,” explained Ravid.

She hoped that the city council would allocate land in the suburb where a swimming pool could be constructed.

According to Ravid, the new development will overlook the nearby park. She said, “The park is also well underway to getting a R5 million worth facelift. The city of Joburg will be doing this soon.”

Ravid added that she would be hosting a meeting with the community to update residents on the revised plan to revamp the park.

“I will announce the date soon as to when we can meet with residents to discuss the plans on the park,” she said.
