Craigpark cleans up the spruit
CraigPark lived up to its slogan, A Community in Action, on Spruit Day.
The spruit clean-up saw the CraigPark Residents’ Association come out in full force, manning tables, helping with co-ordination and picking up litter on the stretch of the Braamfontein Spruit between the Scout Hall in Hamilton Avenue and the Rothesay Avenue bridge.
CraigPark Residents’ Association executive member Martin Williams, said the day was a success with the committee, residents’ association street representatives and residents’ association members all chipping in.
Members of the residents’ association said while the turnout on Saturday was encouraging, it hoped for an even better turnout for future initiatives along the spruit.
“In addition to the environmental aim of a cleaner spruit free of non-indigenous vegetation, attention to the spruit should also improve security, especially for properties bordering on the open ground,” said Williams.
The community from Old Parks and Oerder Park were also joined by a team of unemployed volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to collect litter along the spruit.
Patrick Raseala, who organised this team, said that he encouraged them to take part in the Spruit Day activities, even though they were not being paid.
Dressed in donated orange T-shirts, the group concentrated on the river banks and collected bags and bags of litter.
At midday, representatives from City Parks sought them out and gave them a short talk, hoping to educate them on preserving their environment.
