Con Hill celebrates Youth Day with spirited performances from young creative people

The Basha Uhuru festival returns to Con Hill and features some of the best young people have to offer.

With Youth Day celebrations firmly underway, Constitution Hill will once again host the ever-exciting Basha Uhuru Festival this month.

The youth festival is set to showcase the best that young creatives have to offer. It will take place from 12-14 June at Con Hill and will feature music, art and poetry.

According to Phetsile Nxumalo, of sales and marketing at the site, the event is a collaboration between Con Hill and Kalashnikovv Gallery and is a celebration of Youth Day.

“This festival will showcase a variety of creative art elements… all combined into the melting pot that is Constitution Hill,” he said.

Nxumalo added that two exhibitions would run during the festival, including the Riot Exhibition and will feature 20 local artists all re-creating historic scenes from various anti-apartheid riots.

Also included will be film screenings of 10 short films and two documentaries, all put together by these young creatives.

“The music festival will take place on the last day of the festival and will be held at the Women’s Gaol and will feature… a diverse mix of contemporary South African musicians, poets, and live music,” he said.

The line-up for the music event includes the likes of Desmond and the Tutu’s, Tumi and The Brother Moves On.

Con Hill will also provide free entrance to the museum to the youth for the duration of June, ensuring the spirit of Youth Day lingers during the month.

This is the second time Con Hill is hosting the festival.

The music festival will start at 12pm at the site.
