Resident’s association upgrades Verity Park

The Parkhurst Residents and Business Owner's Association has become actively involved in upgrading Verity Park.

Throughout the course of last year, residents voiced their frustration and concern regarding the state of the park’s children’s play area.

According to committee member of the residents’ association, Paul Johnson the park has been used predominantly by dog walkers however, as more families with young children moved into the suburb, the need for a safe and clean space for the whole family has increased.

A Verity Park user group was formed in an effort to put more focus on the rehabilitation, maintenance and upgrade of the park.

“We have approached City Parks in a bid to get their assistance with improving the children’s playground by firstly, fencing off the area so as to separate the children from the dogs for both safety and cleanliness reasons,” he explained.

“Another priority was to get City Parks to provide us with funds to acquire new equipment.”

However, Johnson said because City Parks had no funds for new equipment, the residents’ association would use its funds to purchase a new see-saw, jungle gym, and tables and benches for the park.

“City Parks has agreed to install fencing, and paint existing playground equipment,” said Johnson.”If more people paid the R1-a-day fee to the resident’s association, more could be done for the community.”

Parktown North nanny, Emily Vilakazi takes her employer’s child to the park twice a week.

Vilakazi said she had noticed the playground equipment had been painted and felt that it had made a difference to the look of the park.
