DJ duo’s store dazzles with exclusive brands

With an eclectic mix of international and local clothes, Debut will bring a unique element to the local fashion industry

Disc Jockey, radio personality and now fashion store owner.

It would seem that Themba Nkosi aka DJ Euphonik has many feathers in his cap. The well-known house music DJ has ventured into the fashion industry by opening his own clothing store.

The store, called Debut, is a co-owned with another popular house music DJ, Khensani Mabaso aka DJ Kent, and was launched on 15 May in Braamfontein.

According to Euphonik, opening the clothing store was a recent idea the two developed and was a reflection of the unique trends the two friends discovered on international trips.

“Basically, what we wanted to do was open a store that was niche and exclusive, and had brands inspired by what we saw overseas,” he said.

He added that cities such as New York and Hong Kong inspired some of the pieces sold at the store, but also that there was a local flavour added through their own fashion label, also titled Debut.

“We wanted to open a store so unique that it would make people want to keep coming back to purchase our brands,” he added.

Of choosing Braamfontein as a location for the store, Euphonik cited the desire to establish a store in a fashion district where people were able to go to a variety of stores to purchase various items.

“That’s how it’s done in places like New York, where many stores are grouped together, so we wanted to emulate that,” he explained.

It was not all smooth sailing as the 5FM personality explained that they did have to overcome some challenges, including having to do their own research into business management in order to have the right information available.

“Additionally stocking the right kind of clothing was a challenge because we realised that people take their clothing very seriously,” he explained.

Despite including imported brands and having an international feel to it, Euphonik insists the available clothing is affordable for customers.

Talking of the future, Euphonik stated that while there were plans to expand, right now the focus was on keeping the new store running like a well-oiled machine.

“We want Debut to be a platform for upcoming designers to showcase their stuff and that is what we’re focused on building,” he said.
