Confession letter uncovers gruesome murder details

Cold case to unravel mystery behind 15 year-old murder case of Cranks employee.

“If you are reading this, then I am dead.”

These were the chilling words found in a letter that led to a 15-year-old murder case finally going to trial.

The case dubbed ‘cold case’, came back into the spotlight 15 years after Betty Ketani went missing and finally began to shed light on what really happened to her. Ketani, who worked as a head chef at the former Rosebank restaurant, Cranks disappeared without a trace in May 1999 after leaving work

According to the Daily Maverick, the letter discovered was a confession detailing the kidnap and eventual murder of Ketani, and included gruesome details of other tortures and kidnappings also conducted.

The letter was found under a carpet in a house in Kenilworth and led to six men, including two policemen, being implicated and arrested for allegedly kidnapping and murdering her.

In another twist to the case, one of the men implicated was fingered as the one who wrote the confession letter, while another is alleged to have hidden it in the house.

A further discovery included six bones found on the property after an extensive search, which were sent sent to one of the world’s foremost DNA testing laboratories in Bosnia.

They are believed to be the few remains of Ketani after she was buried in a shallow grave and allegedly dug up a few years later and disposed of.

The case began in 2012 and continues at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
