Posh Parkhurst – the ‘it’ place in Jozi

Rumour has it that Parkhurst has the best sidewalk cafe culture in Joburg.

Owner of one of the most popular cafés on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst, Jo Pinheiro said the business strip had become the number one destination for dining for people between the ages of 25 and 40.

“Parkhurst has a real village feel, so much so that people from other suburbs are seen coming in to visit and dine here,” he said.

“This is a place where a mother can walk up 4th with their kids and dogs, window shop, have a cup of coffee and walk back down to her house afterwards. That is what I love about Parkhurst.”

Pinheiro said he and the other European-style restaurants on the strip took pride in their sidewalks, and the number of people visiting the suburb was testament to that.

Randburg resident, Emmanuel Mdaka said he’d been to 4th Avenue quite a few times.

“The atmosphere is great, I have never travelled overseas but judging from what I see on TV, I think this is the kind of culture that you would find in the United States and Europe,” he said.

Azizzar Mosupi works in Rosebank and said she was a big fan of the sidewalk restaurants in Parkhurst and Greenside.

“It’s very non-conformist and I think the businesses pride themselves on being outside of the norm,” she said.

Regular patron of a café on 4th Avenue, Kutlwano Mphati said the sidewalk café culture was probably the best way to socialise, and the whole feel of it gave a new young street culture for wining and dining.

Eating out on this busy strip appears to be what one may call, an adventure.
