Brands SA takes girls to work

HOUGHTON – Houghton-based Brand South Africa hosted high school girls as part of the Cell C Take A Girl Child to Work Day campaign.

Grade 10 pupil, Lerato Mphahlele of Namedi Secondary School in Diepkloof who wants to become a biomedical scientist, said the experience had opened her eyes to the professional world.

“I learnt that I should be disciplined in order to succeed and also saw how important communication is in the work Brand South Africa does,” she said.

CEO of Brand SA, Miller Matola inspired the girls as he told a personal story about how he, from a disadvantaged background, had been inspired by an aspiring actuarial scientist who further educated himself.

Motivated, Matola became a truck driver to save up money for university studies. “Anything is possible, if you set your sights on it,” he told the girls.

The girls received invaluable advice from staff of the company and went around the office to see how the workplace operated.

Assistant brand manager at Brand SA, Onke Dumeko said hosting the girls was a pleasure and they were looking forward to doing it again. “The girls were very engaged and inspired, it was a success,” she said.
