On stage in June

BRAAMFONTEIN - Joburg Theatre has some interesting shows lined up for June, including the return of the theatre's most popular show.

The month’s highlights include dance, music and satire.

Spirit of the Dance, the most popular Irish dance show to ever visit our shores, will return to The Mandela stage for an unprecedented sixth season.

The theatre’s executive producer, Bernard Jay, said the show first visited the theatre in 2002, and returned for a second season that year, due to public demand.

The show returned again in 2003, 2005, and 2009, and has given more performances than any other show in the theatre’s history.

This year’s production will feature the beautiful voices of The Irish Angels, a three-woman Irish harmony group, new choreography, and a new finale.

Spirit of the Dance will run from 3 until 15 June.

In The Last Moustache, acclaimed actor Tim Plewman will keep audiences glued to his every word in this satire about the last days of the actor chosen by the Nazis to play Adolf Hitler, after the fuhrer was successfully assassinated by the Allied forces.

The Last Moustache will run at The Fringe at Joburg Theatre from 18 June until 5 July.

On 20 and 21 June, music lovers will be dazzled by the talents of 2010 Idols SA winner, Elvis Blue and the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra in A Night with the Stars.

For something different, Cirque de la Symphonie will bring the magic of cirque to the music hall.

“It is an exciting adaptation of artistic performances widely seen in theatres and arenas everywhere,” said Jay.

“Artists include the most amazing veterans of exceptional cirque programmes… Aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers and strongmen. Each artist’s performance is professionally choreographed to classical masterpieces and contemporary music in collaboration with maestro Theodore Kuchar and the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.”

Cirque de la Symphonie will run from 27 until 29 June.
