Take a girl child to work
Cell C Take A Girl Child to Work appears to have made a difference in the lives of many girl pupils in the country.
The initiative has proved that one day can change the course of a girl’s life. One such girl is Johannesburg’s Mankwana Ramafalo. Now a doctor, as a schoolgirl in 2003, Ramafalo joined the renowned Dr Carol Benn at her breast clinic as part of her work experience.
It proved to be a life altering experience.
“It made me determined to study medicine,” she said. Ramafalo today works as a community service medical doctor, specialising in the treatment of HIV.
Ramafalo visited Benn at the Helen Joseph Hospital Breast Care Centre ahead of Cell C Take A Girl Child to Work day which takes place on 29 May.
She was accompanied by reigning Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss who was a fourth-year medical student when she won the crown.
Ramafalo and Strauss spent time with patients, including 22-year-old Lebo Sehunoe, a student at the University of Johannesburg.
The breast clinic will again be hosting a group of pupils again this year.
Benn said Ramafalo and Strauss were an inspiration to young girl who wanted to further their studies in the medical field.
