Mandela: The Authorised Portrait: Memoriam edition was launched at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton.

The book was launched by Wild Dog Press in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

A narrative of a tremendous journey towards the attainment of freedom, it also features a collection of more than 60 specially commissioned interviews. Friends and associates like Muhammad Ali, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, musician Bono and Thabo Mbeki among many, contribute individual stories of the struggle icon.

The documentary Countdown to Freedom: 10 Days That Changed South Africa, was also screened during the launch. Narrated by James Earl Jones and Alfre Woodard, it takes the viewer behind the scenes of Nelson Mandela’s election campaign in 1994 as never shown before.

The documentary was shot at Mandela’s invitation, and chronicles an intimate 10 days during the period of transition into a new and democratic South Africa.
