Project to help the unemployed start business

The Chabad House in Savoy has launched a project to help unemployed members of the community start up their own businesses.

Bargain Drive is a factory outlet located on Louis Botha Avenue in Savoy, and sells jewellery, furniture, mobile vending units and accessories to interested members of the public.

According to Rabbi David Masinter, all proceeds made in the shop will go to the institution’s charity projects.

He told the North Eastern Tribune that the project was initiated to create business opportunities for members of the community.

“We have items that are selling for as little as R10 and we also give people an opportunity to buy packages according to their budget. We call this business-in-a-box. Different items are placed in one box and sold at the price that the buyer can afford. This helps them to set up their businesses,” said Masinter.

Ravi Smith, manager at the store, said the project was looking to encourage entrepreneurship in the community. He said, “Most of the things we sell in the store are priced to go. We have items like the shoe-shine stand, mobile vending units, as well as watches and accessories, all at affordable prices,” he said.

Smith added that the shop was a charity business drive by Jewish institute, Chabad House.
