Parkhurst fair to showcase lifestyle

PARKHURST - Cycling community given special invitation.

Find out what makes Parkhurst unique at the much-awaited annual fair in July.

The Parkhurst Village Fair promises to be “quintessentially Parkhurst”, and will make for a fun day out with family and friends, both two- and four-legged.

“The fair will showcase and celebrate what makes Parkhurst unique; a balance between a vibrant high street and lifestyle in a cosy and charming neighbourhood,” said the suburb’s residents and business owners association’s chairperson, Cheryl Labuschagne.

“This makes residents passionate about the suburb and [keeps] visitors coming back to create more memories.”

Labuschagne said the fair would focus on the things that make a “typical resident” tick, such as food and drink, sport and fitness, children, pets and community.

She added that many residents took cycling and mountain biking very seriously, and that the suburb was “extremely proud” to have 2013 Tour de France winner, Chris Froome, as a resident.

“As cycling is one of the fastest-growing sports in South Africa, and also one of the biggest lifestyle and eco trends, the bicycle has become more than a mechanical vehicle for exercise in [the suburb],” said Labuschagne.

“It has become the symbol of urban sustainability and a healthy lifestyle that the community… embraces and embodies, and will be one of the central themes around which the fair is built.”

This year, the fair falls on the second-last day of the Tour de France, which will be broadcast live at the fair, thanks to the help of sponsors.

“We… invite the entire cycling community of Johannesburg, be they niche retailers, bespoke engineers and crafters, eco and urban pioneers, cycling clubs etcetera, to come and take part, either through means of sponsorship or vendor stalls, and make use of the unique opportunity to engage with [their] target market,” she said.

The food on the day will be supplied by the Mother Truckers Food Trucks Association, including StrEAT Cuisine, Vuyo’s, Tutto Food Co., Balkan Burger, 5 Star Chefs, and more.

The beer tent will be run exclusively by 11 Shillings Parkhurst Ale, the suburb’s craft beer brewing company.

The fair will take place on 26 July at Verity Park, 6th Avenue, Parkhurst, from 10am until 4pm.
