Sibongile Khumalo prays for Nigerian girls

The Market Theatre has called for the safe return of abducted Nigerian girls.

In solidarity with the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, acclaimed songstress Sibongile Khumalo and the Market Theatre Foundation hosted an event at The Market Theatre on 21 May.

The event started off with a prayer; later, mother and artist, Khumalo, delivered an address.

“The event was to demonstrate that The Market Theatre Foundation is concerned and affected by what is happening on our continent, good or bad,” said James Ngcobo, artistic director of the Market Theatre.

In attendance at the event was the media and members from various art communities.

“We have a terrible xenophobic climate, so this is us again reaching out to those parents in Nigeria who are in extreme pain and anguish of not knowing what has happened to their daughters,” said Ngcobo.

About 230 schoolgirls were kidnapped from a school in Chibok in Nigeria’s north-eastern state of Borno on 14 April. Militant group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the act.

In Abuja, Patience Jonathan, the wife of the Nigerian President, is the President of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM), and has expressed appreciation on behalf of the organisation for support and solidarity extended to the Nigerian government by world leaders and global institutions.
