Motswako concert to showcase best from music students

The Motswako part one concert will feature performances from some of the best jazz and classical music students from Wits.

FEATURING the best that jazz and classical music students have to offer, the Motswako concert will once again take place at the University of the Witwatersrand.

It will feature music from original and sampled music performed in front of an audience and will be hosted by the university’s School of the Arts.

According to Catherine Pisanti, public relations officer at Wits, the concert on 20 May promises to be an unforgettable night.

“The School of Arts uses this concert as an opportunity to give its second, third and fourth year student musicians the experience of playing in a professional public concert,” she said.

Pisanti added that these concerts had been running for several years and gained such popularity that, for the first time this year, it will split into two concerts. The second part of the concert will take place at a later stage.

She added that students go through a rigorous audition, ensuring that only the best are selected and showcased.

“This concert provides a professional platform for these students to engage with a responsive public audience and serves as a showcase for the young talent and high standard of teaching provided here,” she said.

Included in the concert line-up will be music from jazz legends Nat King Cole and Jimmy van Heusen, and also some original student compositions.

“It also serves to promote the music department and encourage a dialogue between current students and potential students looking to study music further after high school,” she said.

Some of the selected students performing in part one include Callandra Youngleson, Daniel de Wet, Nhlanhla Ngqaqu, Siphephelo Ndlovu, Luca de Bellis and Kit Rubi Castro.

Motswako part one will take place in the Music Room at Wits at 7:30pm. Tickets will be sold at the door.
