Scammer targets nursing applicants

Messages demanding money from nursing applicants in order to secure a place at colleges in Gauteng must be ignored.

This was according to the Gauteng Department of Health, which was warning the public of a scam targeting those who had applied to study

nursing at the province’s colleges.

The scam was run by a recruitment agency, which allegedly sent text messages claiming that the applicant’s submission was successful and the recipient must pay R150 as an administration fee, department spokesperson Simon Zwane said.

Zwane said there were no costs involved in the recruitment process and applicants should not pay anyone to secure a place.

“The applications closed on 02 May 2014 and the selection process which involves short-listing of candidates, a psychometric test and interview is currently underway and those selected will be called to participate,” said Zwane.

He added that successful applicants would only be informed in November 2014 and will bear no cost.

Zwane said the scam operators were claiming to be a recruitment agency, but were not affiliating themselves with a particular agency. He said the messages were sent from one number, but the number could not be divulged due to the investigation that was underway and publishing it could alert the perpetrators.

He encouraged victims of the scam to report the matter to the police or submit complaints by calling the department’s 24 hour call centre on 086 001 1000.
