Drummies dream big

Glenhazel Primary School has introduced drum majorettes and has asked members of the community to support the sport.

Teacher and team manager, Nobuhle Zondo told North Eastern Tribune that her team was looking to perform at community events in and around Glenhazel.

“We have a dream as a team to raise money for our school and this would be possible if members of the community can invite us to their events to entertain them,” said Zindo.

According to Zondo, the school has an enrolment of more than 1 000 pupils, most of whom come from neighbouring Alexandra.

She said the sport was introduced to the school as an extra mural activity to help pupils stay fit. She said, “We have performed at a few events since the team’s establishment and are looking forward to doing this even more with the help of the communities we serve as a school.”

On behalf of the school, Zondo thanked parents for their help in buying uniforms for the team. “We could not have done it without them, they have been of great help and we appreciate it very much,” she said.

The team comprises pupils from grades 4 to 7 and practise sessions are held on the school’s soccer field.

Zondo said in a bid to raise money for the school, they are planning for the team to march to Balfour Park Shopping Centre to perform for shoppers and passers-by.

“This we will do to try and get donations from members of the public in order to fund the school’s different projects that may not necessarily be covered in the budget,” she said.

Zondo encouraged interested members of the community to contact the school for bookings as well as more information on how to assist the team.
