Rediscover the city with Gerald Garner

JOBURG - Author and city-lover Gerald Garner has a jam-packed schedule of tours to help residents and visitors rediscover the City of Gold.

Garner’s company, JoburgPlaces offers tours of and books about the city’s hidden and not-so-hidden gems.

“Most exciting is our Pubs, Bars and Rooftops tour,” he said.

“We have tweaked this tour by adding a number of new stops, so even if you have joined us before, come and do it again. It is bound to be a fun-filled day of exploring mesmerising Joburg city spaces.”

18 May: Revisit the stories of Mohandas Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, two world leaders who started their careers as lawyers in Joburg.

The Gandhi to Mandela tour will include visits to Gandhi Square and Chancellor House, the original 1952 law offices of Mandela and Oliver Tambo, as well as the outdoor mining museum along main street.

The tour will start at 2pm.

24 May: The Regenerated Inner-City Walking Tour will take sightseers through Braamfontein, the retail district, the historic core and the corporate mining district.

Learn more about the astonishing story of Joburg’s gold rush, its glory days, and the impact of apartheid until the eventual decline of the inner city.

The tour will start at 12pm.

31 May: Experience some of Joburg’s most famous drinking spots, from trendy rooftop bars to underground pubs and historic watering holes.

The proposed route of the Pubs, Bars and Rooftops tour will include stops at the Sunnyside Park Hotel’s pub, the Guildhall Pub, the Apprentice Penthouse, Curiocity Backpackers, the Parktonian Hotel, and The Orbit jazz club.

The tour cost includes five local drinks and a light lunch, as well as transportation by minibus.
