Strange requests at the koppies

MELVILLE - "Do you sell licences to shoot guinea fowl?" is just one of the strange requests received at Melville Koppies Nature Reserve.

Friends of Melville Koppies’, Wendy Carstens said the management committee of the popular, last conserved remnant of Johannesburg’s ridges sometimes received queries from the public that make them giggle.

Some of the gems include:

Do you sell goose eggs?

Do you sell carts and bridles for horses?

Can we have a party for my brother, make about 12 bonfires, and enjoy coffee and cake?

We love the koppies, so can we build a platform on the grass for 300 guests for our wedding?

Are the fish biting?

Carstens said she was also asked if she could organise a guided tour for nine busloads of people.

The piece de resistance, however, was the question, “Do you guys have rooms to let? Say, one room for about three hours for the two of us?”

Friends of Melville Koppies offer guided walks and hikes across the reserve’s three sections on a regular basis.

Socialised dogs on leads are welcome on Melville Koppies West and East, but not on Melville Koppies Central, a proclaimed heritage site.

The reserve has no electricity, braai or picnic facilities, no tea garden, and no manicured lawns due to the sensitive nature of the environment — the closest visitors will get to the mod cons are taps and septic tank toilets.
