Nazi art plunder on film
SAXONWOLD - The story of Nazi Germany's looting of Europe's great artworks and Allied efforts to recover them will be highlighted this month.
The Majestic Historic Society will present a screening of The Rape of Europa later this month.
The film will take the audience on a journey through seven countries and tell a story of greed and warfare that threatened a continent’s artistic heritage.
The Nazis looted and destroyed art for 12 years.
“Young art historians and curators from America and across Europe fought back, mounting a campaign to rescue and return countless artworks displaced by the war,” said the society’s Henni Erasmus.
“The breathtaking photographs and archival film footage provide a clear understanding of the breadth of destruction. This is a documentary film not to be missed.”
The film will be introduced by film commentator and Radio Today broadcaster, Selwyn Klass, and will be followed by a light hot supper with wine.
The Rape of Europa will be screened on 25 May at the Ditsong Museum of Military History auditorium, 22 Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, at 5.30pm.
