No major incidents during elections – Police

ROSEBANK – As the country went to various voting stations to choose leadership of their choice, police were hard at work to ensure safe elections.

Over 6 million people in Gauteng had registered to participate in the elections, the highest number of the nine provinces in the country. Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said they had planned in advance to prevent any major election disruptions under the Hillbrow cluster police stations.

Although no major incidents occurred in and around Rosebank, Mdletshe said, “There were a few instances where people went to voting stations under the influence and caused disruptions. In general everything went well.”

Mdletshe said being proactive helped them ensure no major incidents took place. “We were firm in deploying members [of the police service] which ensured high visibility,” he said.

In hotspot areas like Bekkersdal where violent protests had threatened the safety of elections, South African National Defence Force soldiers were deployed to ensure the safety and non-intimidation of voters and IEC officials. Two IEC tents were burnt down in the area on the eve of elections.
