Spark plugs used for smash and grabs

PARKTOWN WEST - Parkview Police arrested a male suspect aged 32, for possession of car-breaking equipment.

PARKVIEW Police arrested a male suspect aged 32, for possession of car-breaking equipment.

Parkview police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said officers were conducting an undercover operation at the problematic smash and grab hotspot on the corner of Berry-Hertzog and Napier roads in Parktown West.

“They spotted one male suspiciously walking through stationary vehicles at the intersection… They then approached the said male and introduced themselves as police officials as they were not dressed in uniform,” said Ramovha.

The suspect then allegedly ran away, culminating in a chase by the officers. “They caught up with him and arrested him as he was found to be in possession of spark plugs,” he said.

Spark plugs are often used to smash vehicles windows in order to take valuables from unsuspecting motorists.

The suspect is expected to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.
