Tekkies for charity

Wear your tekkies in support of a charity close to your heart.

The second annual Tekkie Tax day is challenging more South Africans to participate in the fundraising event this year and support charities through their donations.

Animals, basic community welfare, children, disabled people and education are the five areas that will benefit from the Tekkie Tax campaign.

The campaign is driven by the sale of different stickers.

Last year, Choc house in Saxonwold sold stickers to the public for a R10 donation, and this year the childhood cancer foundation’s is encouraging those participating to go funky and also get a pair of shoelaces called Tekkie Tags.

Events co-ordinator of the childhood cancer foundation, Sophie Ndhlovu said, “The campaign is for a large mix of carefully selected welfare organisations, schools and institutions. NGOs who are accountable, reliable and have a history of good service were chosen for the campaign.”

The event raised R2.4 million last year which benefited more than 180 welfare organisations.

On the day, those participating need to wear their big sticker on their lapel and put the small one on their cellphone, and whatever your outfit is on the day, wear tekkies.

It is important that people get permission from their workplace to participate in the campaign.

“They and their colleagues must choose the sector they wish to support, get the appropriate stickers, and wear their tekkies to work on Tekkie Tax day,” said Ndhlovu.

The campaign will take place on 30 May.
