HOUGHTON – The 2nd annual Kaya FM 67km Relay for Mandela Day was launched at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton.

The race will take place at the Waterfall Estate Polo Fields on 13 July.

Event co-ordinator Leon Swanepoel said more than 11 000 runners participated last year. A team of 10 members can enter the relay race and each runner will cover a 6.7km leg before handing over the baton to the next teammate. Entries will be limited to a maximum of 1 500 teams.

CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang said the event had raised R670 000 for the foundation, which predominantly went towards preserving Madiba’s private papers of which about 20 percent had been digitised. The oldest record in their collection dates back to 1929.

The race forms part of events around the world during the month of July which honours the 67 years Mandela spent championing social justice.
