Children to enjoy tennis with the pros

Some children will benefit from the on-going international wheelchair tennis series of tournaments sponsored by Airports Company South Africa.

Non-profit organisation, Wheelchair Tennis South Africa announced that on 30 April, a schools clinic would be held at 3pm at the Ellis Park Tennis Arena during the Airports Company South Africa SA Open.

The organisation in partnership with the City of Joburg have invited children from schools around Johannesburg to be part of the clinic.

These include pupils from Midrand, Newtown, Soweto and Southrand.

Wheelchair tennis coaches, and top local and international players participating in the tournament will take to the court with the pupils as well as children from the local community with the aim of introducing the juniors to wheelchair tennis.

About 300 children with disabilities and able-bodied children are expected to be hosted by the organisation and Airports Company South Africa for an afternoon of fun.

“We are proud to have contributed to the talents of Wheelchair Tennis Champions like Lucas Sithole, KG Montjane and Evans Maripa,” said Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, Airports Company South Africa spokesperson.

“This coaching clinic is part of our on-going national programme to nurture South African talent and produce future champions.”

Karen Losch, general manager of Wheelchair Tennis said, “We will not only take the participating juniors through their paces on the tennis court, but will have other fun activities for them to enjoy such as a jumping castle, and face painting. We want those that join in and fall in love with the game.”

Wheelchair Tennis South Africa extended an invitation to all children under 16 years old to join the event, to learn new skills and have a fun-filled afternoon.

“Wheelchair Tennis enthusiasts are encouraged to come early to see some of the best wheelchair tennis players in the world in action,” said Losch. “You will be inspired to go onto court and produce the best you can.”
